✅ Short Answer: Yes — Your SBI FASTag Works with MLFF
Your existing SBI FASTag is 100% compatible with MLFF plazas. MLFF uses the same RFID technology as existing FASTag toll booths — just overhead gantry-mounted instead of booth-mounted. The scanner reads your tag's RFID chip at highway speed, deducts the toll from your wallet, and sends you an SMS. No new device, no separate registration needed.
The one difference: at a traditional booth, you can stop if there's a deduction error. At an MLFF plaza, the deduction happens at 80–100 km/h. If your balance is zero or your FASTag fails to scan, you will receive an E-Notice — and you have 72 hours to pay it on the iHMCL portal before the amount doubles. Read the full E-Notice guide →
📡 What Is MLFF Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling?
MLFF is India's new-generation highway toll system approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to eliminate traffic jams at toll plazas. Instead of stopping at a booth, overhead gantry equipment spanning the full highway width reads your FASTag as you drive through at normal highway speed.
| Feature | Traditional FASTag Booth | MLFF Barrier-Less |
|---|---|---|
| Speed at toll | Must slow/stop | Full highway speed (80–100 km/h) |
| Barrier | Yes — boom barrier | No barrier at all |
| Tag technology | RFID (FASTag) | RFID (same FASTag) |
| New device needed | No | No — existing FASTag works |
| Failed payment | Charged double at booth | E-Notice issued, 72 hrs to pay |
| Traffic impact | Queues at booth | Zero queue — continuous flow |
📍 Where Is MLFF Operational in India (2026)?
- Chorayasi Toll Plaza, NH53, Gujarat — India's first MLFF, launched May 1, 2026
- NH48 (Delhi–Mumbai Expressway corridor) — deployment in progress, 2026
- NH44 (Delhi–Chennai) — announced, phased rollout
- NH58 (Delhi–Haridwar) — under consideration
NHAI plans to convert all major national highway toll plazas to MLFF by 2028. As of May 2026, Chorayasi is the only fully operational MLFF plaza.
⚠️ Critical: Keep Your FASTag Ready for MLFF
- Maintain sufficient balance — at MLFF, there is no time to stop and check. The deduction happens instantly. Keep a minimum ₹300–₹500 buffer.
- Correct windshield placement — FASTag must be on the inner side of the windshield at the top centre. Any obstruction (tint film, sun shade) can cause scan failure.
- Keep KYC updated — expired or pending KYC causes tag deactivation and scan failure at MLFF.
- Check for blacklisting — a hotlisted tag will fail to scan at every MLFF plaza and generate E-Notices.
